The New England Patriots have made it official - Julian Edelman will be lost for the entire season with that knee injury sustained in the preseason game vs Detroit Friday night.

The team won't say that it's an ACL tear but ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that is what league sources are saying.

Coach Bill Belichick held a Saturday conference call and was asked about the Edelman loss...

"Julian is a great competitor, works hard, is tough, does all the things that you ask him to do. So I feel badly for him, of course. … We hope that he will have a speedy and complete recovery, but the team will have to move on and compete this season without him. It's unfortunate, but that's the way it is. We'll have to figure that out. … Julian will be here on a regular basis doing his rehabilitation and so forth. You never really move on from that standpoint … [but] this team has to move forward with the resources we have. Unfortunately, we've lost one. An important one. But as a team we still have to move forward and that's what we'll do. That process has already started."

NOTE: The Patriots also announced that DE Kony Ealy has been released. He was acquired from the Carolina Panthers for a 2nd round pick but doesn't stay long in Foxboro.
