Paul Kariya Enters B.C. Hall Of Fame

Former UMaine hockey great Paul Kariya was inducted into the British Columbia Sports Hall of Fame last night. He is a Vancouver, B.C. native.

Kariya came to Orono as one of the most hyped college recruits ever and he lived up to the hype.

In his freshman season of 1992-93, Kariya helped the Black Bears to a national title. He scored 25 goals and dished out 75 assists for an astounding 100 points. He was the Hobey Baker Award winner.

Kariya was the 4th overall pick in the 1993 NHL draft by the Anaheim Ducks. He played 9 seasons in the NHL, 989 games played, 989 points (402 goals).

He sat out the 2010-2011 NHL season because of concussion issues and then announced his retirement from the game.

Kariya was one of nine athletes and one team to be enshrined last night.
