The Penobscot Valley Howlers girls outlasted the Schenck Wolverines in a tight Class C quarterfinal contest at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor Tuesday night.

The No. 4 Howlers (15-4) played tenacious defense in the second half, coming away with a 40-37 win over the No. 5 seed Schenck.

The Howler's defense on the final possession forced the Wolverines to settle for a long three that would have tied the game but bounced off the rim as time expired.

It t was a close contest throughout, with the teams tied at 21 at the half.

The Howlers were led by freshman Judith King with 13 points, including four 3-pointers. Samantha Ireland added 10 points.

For Schenck, Chantel Lane, Anna Sewell and Kayla Falone each had 10 points.

The Wolverines finish with a 14-5 record.
