When the classification committee of the Maine Principals Association put together a new five class system it did not include regional titles for class AA, that could soon change. The system which will be for basketball next year if approved by a vote of principals on April 30 will have the schools with the highest enrollments playing in class AA. Because only 16 to 18 schools will play in this class, the plan called for the top two teams to play for a state championship rather than play the traditional regional tournaments.

Some of those schools including Bangor met at the MPA offices Friday morning to discuss a change that would split the schools and result in a North and South Champion that would play for a state title.

The meeting concluded with a tentative plan to use class A football as a model to divide the teams. Schools in class AA will now vote for or against the proposal.
