For just the third time in the last 18 games, the Red Sox come up on the short end of a game. In the rain in Baltimore, the O's beat the Sox 7-6.

All in all it was a weird night at Camden Yards. The lowly Birds traded their closer, Zach Britton, to the Yankees. Their new closer, Brad Brach, almost blew the game in the 9th inning.

The Red Sox hit four home runs, two of them by J.D. Martinez and still lost.

In the end it was poor performances from startng pitcher Drew Pomeranz and then by reliever Joe Kelly. The Sox never fully recovered from their bad outings.

So the Sox drop to 71-32 and with the Yankees winning last night, the lead for the Red Sox drops to five games in the AL East.
