Red Sox second baseman Ian Kinsler was placed on the disabled list after straining his left hamstring while running the bases in the first inning of Friday night’s game against the Yankees.

Kinsler, who was acquired in a deal with the Los Angeles Angels at the trade deadline, appeared to injure himself as he scored from second on a bloop single by Eduardo Nunez.

He had gone 4-for-10 with two RBIs since joining the Red Sox and is batting .244 with 13 home runs and 34 RBIs this season.

Brock Holt and Tony Renda, who was called up from Triple-A Pawtucket, could see time at second base in Kinsler's absence.

The Red Sox also transferred Dustin Pedroia to the 60-day DL to make room for Renda.

On Friday, catcher Blake Swihart was placed on the 10-day DL with a right hamstring strain, and the Red Sox purchased the contract of catcher Dan Butler from the PawSox.
