The signing of Pablo Sandoval with the Boston Red Sox did not end as expected as the team designated the third baseman for assignment on Friday morning.

$36 million over the next two years.  They will also have to pay a $5 million buyout for the 2020 season for a total of $49 million in total due to Sandoval.

He was on the 10-day disabled list and was set to return from Triple-A to Boston this weekend, before the decision came down to release him.  Sandoval appeared in 161 games with the Boston Red Sox and hit .237.

Boston will likely announce the promotion of prospect Rafael Devers to Triple-A as well after appearing in the MLB Futures Game and the Eastern League All-Star Game this week
