Seattle Mariners to Make Baseball History By Flying Gay Pride Flag During Game
The walls dividing sports and sex continue to come down.
The flag will be unfurled this Sunday, when the Mariners host the Chicago Cubs.
A spokeswoman for the team said, “We’re a part of this community. Our fans are a reflection of our community. We thought this was an appropriate gesture on a day that is very meaningful to the LGBT community.”
This development also marks a change of sorts in the team’s embracing of homosexuality. Back in 2008, the Mariners found themselves in the middle of a controversy when a female fan complained to an usher after watching a lesbian couple kiss.
This is merely the latest step in the acceptance of homosexuality in sports. Earlier this year, veteran NBA player Jason Collins became the first person in any of the four major sports to come out.
