With Blake Swihart out with a ankle injury, the Red Sox have added insurance at the catching position by claiming Erik Kratz from Kansas City.

It is still unclear how long Swihart will be out of the lineup. Sandy Leon has filled in since Swihart jammed his ankle on a slide at third base over the weekend.

Ryan Hannigan will soon go on a rehab assignment as he comes back from the DL.

So, Kratz was claimed from KC after the designated him for assignment. KC decided to keep Drew Butera as their backup catcher.

Kratz is 34-years-old and has played in 180 major league games, hitting .217.

The Sox are off today and will begin a series with Baltimore tomorrow night at Fenway.
