For the second year in a row the Boston Red Sox have traded for a closer -- acquiring Joel Hanrahan form the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Sox gave up Mark Melancon and three prospects to complete the deal. New manager John Ferrell has told Hanrahan that the closer job is his entering spring training while Andrew Bailey will be in the set up role.

The Sox traded for Bailey last off-season but pitched in only 19 games after injuring his thumb in spring training which required surgery.

Hanrahan, a two time all-star, had 36 saves last season while striking out 36 and posting an ERA of 2.72
