The Boston Red Sox could not produce enough runs for the second consecutive game as they fell in the series opener versus the San Diego Padres on Monday by a score of 2-1.

Boston again had trouble supporting its starter after Drew Pomeranz allowed two runs over just over five innings on the hill.  Heath Hembree, Robbie Ross Jr, and Joe Kelly combined for 2.1 innings of hit-less ball in relief to keep the Sox in the contest.  The lone Boston run would come in the form of a solo homer from Chris Young in the top of the eighth.

The Sox scored a combined 27 runs in two games versus Oakland to start the road trip before getting shutout on Sunday and producing just a lone run on Monday.  Boston struck out 14 times as a team which matched a team high.

Boston is still a game back in the AL East race after Toronto lost to the Yankees 5-3 earlier in the day.  The Sox and Padres will play the second game of the series on Tuesday night as Clay Buchholz faces Paul Clemens from Petco Park.
