The Major League trade deadline passed without the Red Sox making a move and the guy thought to be on the move provided the winning hit to beat the Rays 7-5.Mike Napoli is one of this year's underperforming players that many thought would be shipped out at the trade deadline. Napoli instead took his place at first base for the opener of the weekend series against Tampa Bay and smacked a 2-run homer in the bottom of the 7th inning to turn a 5-4 deficit into a 6-5 lead.

Boston would add an insurance run on the 8th inning when a Brandon Gomes wild pitch allowed Blake Swihart to score the 7th run of the game.

Alejandro De Aza and Swihart helped lead the offense with 2 hits and 2 rbi each while Brock Holt added 2 hits of his own.

Junichi Tazawa got the win in relief while Koji Uehara pitched the 9th inning to get his 23rd save of the season.
