Somewhere between Baltimore and Cincinnati, in the middle of the night, the Boston Red Sox found out they had clinched a playoff spot and the guarantee of October baseball.

The Sox had pounded the O's 9-0 and were en route to Cincy while the LA Angels were losing to Cleveland 6-5.

That combination wrapped up at least an AL Wildcard spot. They still have a three game lead over the Yankees for the American League East.

Mookie Betts and Deven Marrero hit two-run home runs, Hanley Ramirez had three hits and three RBI to lead the Sox attack against Baltimore pitching.

Chris Sale did the rest, strking out 13 batters in eight innings, including #300 on the season.

The Sox are now a season-best 24 games over 500 at 88-64 with 10 games left.
