A solid start and really tough finish for Bangor pro golfer Jesse Speirs in his Web.com Tour debut in Panama City, Panama.

Speirs was 1-under par through his first nine holes. After 12 holes he was 2-under par.

Then the roof caved in. Five bogeys in his last six holes. That means a first round score of 3-over par 73. Speirs is tied for 105th place after day one.

The leader is the tournament is 5-under par and so that leaves Speirs eight shots back.

Speirs will tee off today at 8:05am.

After several years of trying to earn a spot on the PGA's Triple-A tour, Speirs finally earned his playing card in December when he finished 14th at the qualifying tournament.

The 2016 Web.com Tour begins today in Panama followed by a tournament Colombia next week. The first event in the U.S. is in March.

Speirs will compete in a  field of 144 golfers. They are playing for a first place prize of $112,500. He tees off at 1pm.

There are 21 tournaments on the Web.com Tour for 2016. The top 25 money earners get their PGA Tour card for 2017.

Speirs is a 3-time Maine Junior Amateur Golf  champion. He won the Maine Amateur Championship in 2009 and won the Greater Bangor Open pro tournament in 2011.
