Former Orono Red Riots track standout Hannah Steelman has set T&F history at Wofford College in South Carolina. She is the first student-athlete from that school to qualify for the NCAA National Division I Championship Meet.

At the NCCA East Regional meet over the weekend in Florida, Steelman qualified in the 3,000 meter steeplechase event and the 5,000 meter steeplechase.

She ran the 3,000 steeplechase in a school record time of 10:00.70 and finished 8th overall. Steelman was 10th in the 5,000 steeplechase. The top 12 finishers earn spots in the Nationals.

Steelman was named Southern Conference (SoCon) Freshman of the Year. Overall, in cross country, indoor track and now out track, she owns eight Wofford school records.

The NCAAs are in Eugene, Oregon June 6th through the 9th.

NOTE: The steeplechase event is often called an obstacle race. The course features barriers and water jumps...At Orono HS, Steelman was a member of three state chamionship teams in both cross country and track and field...Former Lewiston HS and now Penn State runner, Isaiah Harris, will also compete in the NCAAs in the 800 meters...Former Lake Region HS and now University of Georgia's Kate Hall will compete in the long jump event.
