The Toronto Maple Leafs have announced that former UMaine hockey captain Dave Nonis has been signed to a five year extension to stay on as GM of their NHL team.

Nonis took over as Leafs GM just days after the lockout ended back in January. The team fired Brian Burke and Nonis, his assistant, took over GM duties.

The Leafs made the playoffs for the first time since 2004. You may remember the little game-7 comeback by the Boston Bruins against the Leafs.

Nonis captained UMaine hockey team in 1987 and 1988, both Black Bear teams played in the NCAA tournament.

He has been in NHL management since 1990.
