Former UMaine coach Greg Cronin and his fellow Toronto Maple Leaf assistant coaches are fired. Head coach Randy Carlyle gets a contract extention. Welcome to the world of pro coaching.

What makes this move interesting is that another former UMaine Black Bear did the firing - Maple Leafs GM Dave Nonis.

Nonis is a former captain of the Black Bears. Cronin was an assistant coach at Maine and was interim head coach when Shawn Walsh served his NCAA suspension.

Nonis and new Toronto hockey president, Brendan Shanahan decided to keep Carlyle and give him a two year extention but axed all his assistants. Cronin, Scott Gordon and Dave Ferrish.

The Maple Leafs did not make the playoffs, fading down the stretch with a 2-12 record.
