UMaine hockey squares off with the UMass-Lowell River Hawks in the best-of-three series starting Thursday night. The stats say #8 does not beat #1 very often in the Hockey East quarterfinals.

Only three times in the last 15 years has a #8 knocked off a #1. That doesn't bode well for the Bears...except you should know some of the other stats between Maine and UMass-Lowell.

For instance, Maine and UML have met 15 times in the Hockey East tournament   -  the Black Bears lead the series 14-1.

Maine and the River Hawks have met 111 times in regular season play. The Bears own a 77-32-2 record.

The two teams have played three times this year with Maine winning twice.

BLACK BEAR FACTOID:  Maine's freshmen have scored 40.8% of the goals this year. The seniors account for 32.5%.
