Maybe it was the new alternate jerseys. Maybe it was lighting the lamp three times. Maybe it was Matt Morris making 39 saves.

Whatever...The UMaine hockey team got its first win of the season Friday night, a 3-2 victory over Vermont.

Dan Ranouf scored two of the goals and assisted on the other goal by Blaine Byron.

Goalie Matt Morris stopped 39 shots, just one save away from his career high.

The Catamounts did outshoot Maine 41-29 but Vermont went 0-for-3 on their powerplay. The Black Bears were 2-for-5.

UMaine's record is now 1-8-3 (1-4 HE). Vermont is 3-7-2 ((2-3-2 HE).

The second game of the weekend series at Alfond Arena is today at 4pm.
