A University of Maine football player has been charged with murder. The stabbing involved two people in Florida, one of whom died from his injuries.

Zedric Joseph was a senior at the University of Maine but university officials say he was suspended from the school on March 8th, a day after the university received word of the stabbing. He was majoring in child development and family relations at the university.

UMaine officials say they were informed Friday about a stabbing involving two people in Florida. WPTV in Palm Beach says Ricardy Chery, 23, died of his stab wounds. Another victim, Vashti Laurore,also 23, was treated and released from the hospital.

Joseph, who played football for Palm Beach Central High School, was arrested today and charged with murder.

“We were very saddened to learn that a University of Maine student has been arrested in connection with the death of one person and the injury of another in Florida,” said Kenda Scheele, UMaine assistant vice president and senior associate dean for students. “Our thoughts and prayers are with those whose lives have been forever changed by this horrific incident.”

“This is very hard to comprehend,” said UMaine football coach Jack Cosgrove. “We extend our deepest sympathies to the victims and their families and friends connected to this tragedy.”

Counseling and support services are available on campus for students and staff affected by these events.
