University of Southern Maine senior shortstop Sam Dexter(Messalonskee HS) has been named to the 2016 Golden Spikes Award preseason watch list. The award goes to the nation's top amateur player.

Dexter is the only Division-III player on the 50 player list. He is the first D-III player to make the list since 2014.

Dexter won conference and nation player of the year honors last year when he hit .441 for the Huskies in 46 games. He hit eight home runs, drove in 44 runs and stole 11 bases.

The 39th Golden Spikes winner will be announced on June 30th. Last year, Red Sox #1 draft pick Andrew Benintendi (Arkansas) won the award. Other past winners include David Price, Bryce Harper and Buster Posey.

Note: USM begins play on March 12th vs Worcester State.
