Meet The Expert
Stephen Nightingale, M.D.BS
A native Mainer, Dr. Stephen Nightingale grew up in Fort Fairfield, and graduated as salutatorian from his high school class in 1973. During high school, he was one of the top middle distance runners in the state. Dr. Nightingale worked every summer and fall from age 8 through high school on local potato farms. After graduating, he attended West Point from 1973-1975, then transferred to University of Maine to study Chemical engineering where he graduated with a BS in chemical engineering. Dr. Nightingale then went to graduate school in Wisconsin at the Institute of Paper Chemistry. Following completion of his Master’s degree in engineering, he went to work for the largest paper company in the world, International Paper. He spent two years at the corporate research center in Tuxedo Park, NY, applying and developing new energy technology for the production facilities. This was during the first oil embargo when alternative energy technology and improving energy efficiency was critical to the success of the industry.
After four years of traveling throughout the country for International Paper, Dr. Nightingale decided to attend medical school at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. His third and fourth years were at the Tuscaloosa campus, where he had a chance to witness the sports crazed “Crimson Tide” in person. After graduating from UAB, he completed his residency in Springfield, Mass. in both Pediatrics and Internal Medicine. This specialty was relatively new at the time, but has gained interest over the last 20 years.
Since completing his residency, Dr. Nightingale has been in private practice in Ellsworth, Maine. His practice is primarily Internal Medicine and pediatrics, but ten years ago he started treating spider veins with a laser and the rest is history. Since then Coastal Skin Center has become one of the most diversified and all inclusive cosmetic dermatology centers in the state. Through additional training and with the addition of specialized equipment, he is able to treat very simple problems like acne or rosacea or more difficult problems, like excess fat with liposuction, varicose veins with the Venefit vein closure procedure, and facial aging with fillers and fat transfer.
Dr. Nightingale works with each patient to develop their own aesthetic prescription. Since he offers so many procedures he can tailor the prescription to include the best procedure or products for the patient.

Is Thermage right for me?
Thermage can give you a smoother, tighter, younger looking face with no downtime, no injections, and one procedure. Many celebrities use Thermage to keep themselves marketable. If the mirror doesn’t reflect the way you feel on the inside, Thermage may be your answer to turn back the clock. Thermage gives you gradual, natural looking results. Thermage uses unique radiofrequency (RF) technology to safely heat the deep layers of your skin, while cooling the surface to keep it intact during the procedure. This deep heating stimulates your body’s natural skin renewal process, which helps tighten existing collagen and form new collagen. Over time, sagging or wrinkles are replaced with a smoother, tighter; improved tone and texture; and an overall younger looking appearance. Thermage can be used on your face or body.
How does Liposonix work?
Liposonix targets stubborn areas with a high-intensity ultrasound energy to reduce your waistline without surgery. On average, patients can expect to lose one clothing size. Liposonix is safe and the results are seen within eight to twelve weeks. This procedure is non-invasive and has no downtime. You can return to your daily activities right away, although you may experience some tenderness or bruising. The high-intensity ultrasound energy is focused on the targeted fat and the skin is not harmed as fat tissue just beneath the skin is permanently destroyed.
Which fat reduction procedure is right for me?
Body Jet liposuction loosens cells with gentle pulses of fluid, and then removes the cells and the fluid from the body, resulting in less damage to surrounding tissues. Body Jet can be used on the abdomen, thighs, arms, love handles, and bra line. Liposonix uses high-intensity focused ultrasound energy to reduce your waistline without surgery. Liposonix is non-invasive and the treatment is completed in about an hour. The skin is not harmed as fat tissue just beneath the surface is permanently destroyed, leaving you with a thinner, more contoured waistline.
How long does it take to remove a tattoo?
Laser tattoo removal varies from patient to patient. There are many variables that affect tattoo removal such as type of ink, whether the tattoo was done at home or by a professional, and age of the tattoo. Some tattoos need as few as two treatments while others may require 5 – 8 treatments.
Can you treat my spider veins?
At CSC, three procedures are offered for vein issues. From superficial spider veins to varicose veins, all can be treated in our office. Smaller veins are usually treated with a laser procedure. Larger veins may need to be injected with an agent to close the vein. Varicose veins that cause painful swelling and leg heaviness can be treated with the Venefit Vein closure procedure, which is covered by most private insurances.
