The National Weather Service on Tuesday upgraded its advisory for the Bangor region to a winter storm warning and called for more snow than originally expected.

The updated warning will be in effect from 6 p.m. Tuesday to 1 p.m. Wednesday and includes all of northern and eastern Maine. The forecast is calling for 9-15 inches of snow, with higher amounts possible in southern and central Piscataquis County.

Bangor is expected to get 9 inches of snow, but accumulations could range from 5 inches to 12 inches, according to the latest forecast.

Heavy snow and difficult travel are expected. High winds are expected to cause drifting snow during the day Wednesday.

The weather advisory affects areas as far south as Augusta, west to Rangeley, east to Eastport and north to Madawaska.
