The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for much of eastern and central Maine, calling for up to 12 inches of heavy, wet snow through Sunday night.

A strengthening coastal storm is expected to bring 8 to 12 inches of snow through Sunday away from the immediate coast. The snow could mix with rain and be accompanied by high winds.

Because the snow is expected to be heavy and wet, forecasters advise that accumulating snow on trees could result in power outages. Motorists are advised to use caution under these difficult driving conditions.

The storm warning is in effect to 1 a.m. Monday.
