Heartbreak for the Husson Eagles in their home opener. The Western New England Golden Bears came north and beat the Eagles 31-28.

The Eagles were driving for a game winning touchdown when WNE's Tommy Ganley intercepted a Cory Brandon pass in the end zone with 31-seconds left in the game.

Husson and WNE have now played three times in recent years and the Golden Eagles have won all three by close scores. The Eagles will join WNE's conference the Commonwealth Coast Conference next year. WNE is the two-time reigning conference champ.

Coach Gabby Price and his Eagles trailed WNE 10-0 in the third quarter before getting the offense in gear.

Two Brandon TD throws put the Eagles up 14-10.

Then the two teams started trading touchdowns and when WNE scored a TD with just of over three minutes to go, the Golden Eagles had regained the lead at 31-28.

Husson marched down the field and appeared to be headed for another score and the pass pick by WNE.

How close were the final stats? Both teams had 20 first downs. WNE had 350 yards of offense, Husson 380. The Eagles had the ball for 30:29, the Golden Eagles had it 29:31.

Freshman running back Solomon Hassen led Husson with 121 yards on 28 carries.Kyle Gaudet had eight catches for 80 yards. QB Corey Brandon was 23-for-38 for 254 yards, three TDs and that one interception.

Husson heads into the bye week at 1-2. Western New England is now 2-1.
