The defending state champion Washburn Beavers will vie for yet another Eastern Maine championship on Saturday when they will take on the Fort Farifield Tigers at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Cross Insurance Center.

Washburn Rolls Over Machias To Advance in Tourney

Washburn started off fast and didn’t let up on their way to a 70-28 semifinal win over the Machias Bulldogs Thursday afternoon.

With the win, the Beavers -- The No. 1 seed in Eastern Maine -- take another step in their pursuit of a record fifth state title.

Senior Mackenzie Worcester led the Beavers with 23 points. Junior guard Emelia Churchill had 16 points and Joan Overman added 10.

Tate Dolley, a junior, led the No. 7 Bulldogs with 13 points.

Washburn forced 23 turnovers in the game. The Beavers improve to 20-0 on the season.

Fort Fairfield Defeats Machias in EM Semifinal

The Fort Fairfield girls advanced to the Eastern Maine finals after defeating Van Buren Thursday afternoon at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.

The No. 3 Tigers from Fort Fairfield lost the lead only once in the first quarter and pulled away to a 45-29 win over the No. 7 Bulldogs.

Fort Farifield is 19-2 after the win. Those two losses coming at the hands of the No. 1 Washburn Beavers, whom they will play in the Eastern Maine Championship on Saturday.

Megan Jellison led the Tigers with 19 points. Chelsey Pelkey added 10 points in the win. Jellison and Pelkey were named McDonald's co-players of the game.

For Van Buren, senior Felisha Bouchard scored 11 points. Courtney Parent added 5 points before fouling out.

Van Buren ends the season at 15-6.
