Former UMaine and Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jevon Belcher, who shot and killed his girlfriend before committing suicide in 2012, suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy(CTE). It is a form of brain damage that has been in other deceased football players.

According to a report from ESPN's "Outside The Lines" Belcher's body was exhumed a year after his death. Attorneys representing Belcher's mother started the process to have Belcher's brain studied.

CTE is a disease, researchers say, caused by by repeated head trauma.
