The man to replace Jack Cosgrove as UMaine football coach is 29-year-old Joe Harasymiak - the Bears defensive coordinator for the past two years.

Athletic director Karlton Creech made the announcement this afternoon after conducting a national search.

Harasymiak gets a 4-year contract worth $150,000 a year. He has been serving as interim head coach since the announcement last month that Cosgrove was stepping down after 23 years to move into an administrative job in the athletic department.

Harasymiak is on the road recruiting but issued a statement, " I am excited and honored to be chosen the next football coach here at the University of Maine. To think of all the great head coaches who have come through here and to be selected to be part of that group is humbling. I can't wait to get started."

The promotion to head coach becomes effective on January 1st.

He came to UMaine in February of 2011 as a defensive assistant coach. In 2012 he was promoted to head defensive backs coach and then promoted to defensive coordinator.

Harasymiak is a Springfield College grad and captained the football team in 2007.

He coached at his alma mater and also spent one year as an assistant coach at Maine Maritime Academy in Castine.

He becomes Maine's 35th head football coach.
