Hermon Boys Upset MDI 54-49

The MDI Boys hosted Hermon Saturday afternoon at 3:30, and it featured two players who had won the Big East Boy's Player of the Week twice, combining for 4 of the five weekly awards, namely Jon Phelps of MDI and Tyler Thayer of Hermon.. The battle today was won by Thayer and Hermon, as they defeated MDI 54-49.

MDI jumped out to a 10-8 lead at the end of the 1st Quarter. Jon Phelps had 5 points including a 3-pointer and Riley Swanson had a 3-pointer for MDI, while Tyler Thayer scored 7 of Hermon's 8 points, including a 3-pointer.

It was tied 20-20 at the end of the 1st half, as Thayer hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to tie the score. In the 2nd Quarter, Thayer had 2 3-pointers and had 17 of Hermon's 20 points at the end of the 1st Half.

In the 3rd Quarter, Thayer added 11 points, going 5-6 from the free throw line,  and at the end of the 3rd Quarter, Thayer had 28 of Hermon's 37 points. In the 3rd Quarter MDI's Andrew Davis had 6 points, and Abe Philbrook added 5 points, including a 3-pointer.

In the 4th Quarter, Thayer went 8-8 from the free throw line, adding 10 more points. In the 4th Quarter, Hermon went 11-14 from the foul line, as MDI was forced to foul, in an attempt to get back into the game, as Hermon's lead increased to 7 points at one time.

For the game, Hermon's Tyler Thayer finished with 38 points, including 3 3-pointers and went 15-19 from the free throw line. Hermon as a team went 19-28 from the foul line. MDI was led by Jon Phelps with 12 points while Andrew Davis had 10 points. Riley Swanson had 2 3-pointers, while Phelps and Abe Philbrook each had a 3-pointer.

With the loss, MDI falls to 8-3, and plays Washington Academy at home on Monday, January 20th, in a game that has been postponed three times this year. That game will be aired on WDEA AM 1370 and WDEA Internet Radio with the pregame starting at 6:45ish. Hermon improves to 7-3 and plays at Penquis Valley on Monday, January 20th at 7 PM.
