If the Phillies think their catcher Carlos Ruiz is worth a 3-year and $26 million dollars, how much will it take for the Red Sox to keep Jarrod Saltalammachia? The Phils made that deal with their 35-year-old catcher to keep him. Salty is much better with the bat than Ruiz and he's only 29.

And so here we go. Welcome to the free agent wars.

The Phillies decided to pay Ruiz close to $9 million per year and give him three years guaranteed, plus incentives.

There were some reports that had the Red Sox in on Ruiz but now that he returns to Philadelphia, the catcher market is basically Salty, higher-priced Brian McCann and A.J. Pierzynski.

Isn't the hot stove season great?
