Even though I was not a University of Maine student, I went to college close enough to Orono to be able to occasionally attend a U Maine hockey or football game.

As a kid from Northern Maine who had never really had a chance go to many big sporting events, I was shocked by the fans.  Not just by how many attended these games, but also by how fired-up they were.  I mean that in the best way, of course.

In addition to how dedicated the fans were to the Black Bears, I was all about the fact that the games had a beer garden.

It looks like the alcohol policy at these games is about to change in a big way.

According to an article on the WABI website, fans who want to have a beer will no longer be confined to the beer garden area.  Fans of the Black Bears will now be able to have their beers in the stands.

Of course, there are some restrictions to this new policy.  Sales will stop at the beginning of the 4th quarter (for football games) and there will be a two drink limit.

The beer garden will continue to operate the way that it has in the past and there will be alcohol-free zones throughout the stands.

The new policies will go into effect on September 27th.
