Last winter was definitely abnormal.

With the exception of a few really nasty storms (one in mid-December and one in mid-January), the winter was fairly mild.  With the exception of a handful of rain and snowstorms, last winter was calm.

Even the temperatures remained mild.  According to records kept by the National Weather Service, most towns in Maine were about five degrees above average for the majority of the winter.

The Farmer’s Almanac Extended Winter Forecast

The Farmer’s Almanac, which is based in Lewiston, Maine, has released an extended winter forecast.  They are saying the upcoming winter will be a “wet winter whirlwind”.

Like last year, they are predicting that the temperatures here in New England will be warmer than they normally are in the middle of winter.  However, unlike last winter, we should be prepared for a lot more precipitation.

The Farmer’s Almanac is calling for lots of “rapid-fire storms that will bring both rain and snow”.  The Almanac goes on to say that there will be little downtime between these weather events.

The almanac gives La Niña as the reason why we will see above-average precipitation this winter.

The almanac warns that we will probably get a significant weather event sometime between January 20 and 27.

The 200-year-old almanac also suggests that we could see freezing temperatures across much of the region at the end of January or the beginning of February.
