Popular Portland Pizzeria Earns Title of Maine’s Best
A popular Portland pizza joint is receiving top honors for its unique and tasty pies.
The trendy website LoveFood recently published a list of the best pizza restaurant in every state. Maine's representative is a tremendous selection. It's a place known for big flavor and large slices...or should I say slabs?
Slab Sicilian Street Food was named Maine's top spot. The Portland pizza parlor has been a culinary sensation since opening a decade ago. Slab is best known for their monstrous "slabs" of Sicilian-style pizza that are more than just a meal; they are a culinary dream. Delicious dough is topped with perfectly seasoned sauce, fresh cheese, a shot of oil, and seasoned to perfection. Your first bite will make you a fan for life.
Slab's origin story began with the legendary late Portland master baker, chef, and author Steven Lanzalotta. He originally ran the pizza program at Micucci's Market before opening Slab with his business partners. Lanzalotta's creativity and skill helped Slab become an instant hit. Sadly, Lanzalotta passed away in 2022 after a long battle with cancer.
Lanzalotta's legacy lives on with every slab and sandwich that comes out of the kitchen. The joint has even added mouth-watering thin crust pizzas. And like everything else, it has been received exceptionally well.
Now, full disclosure. I have a friendly relationship with the owners of Slab. However, I would tell you this pizza is amazing even if I didn't, because it's the truth. But don't just take my word for it. Here is a little of why LoveFood chose Slab as Maine's top pizza.
Visitors to this Sicilian street food bar in Portland absolutely rave about their slab pizzas. They’re square, two inches thick, and fluffier and breadier than normal pizza. The pepperoni hand slab is covered in layers of sauce, caramelized cheese, and crisp, cured meat. Or check out the spicy meat slab with red pepper sauce, pepperoni, pepperoncini, mozzarella, provolone, and blue cheese dip.
Slab's newest claim to fame is the incredible frozen rising-crust pizza that can be found in grocery stores and specialty food shops statewide, most of New Hampshire, and parts of Massachusetts. This is not your average frozen pizza. It's a bread-and-cheese masterpiece that you can make at home in about 20 minutes. It's not crazy to say that Slab has literally revolutionized the frozen pizza game.
Congrats to Slab for receiving this fine notoriety from LoveFood. I can't imagine how difficult it was to make this choice, especially with all the great pizza places in Portland alone, not to mention the rest of the state. So, let's recognize a bunch more.
