On January 21st Travis Shaw came to Bangor and told Sox fans that he was going to do everything he could to win a starting job. Today, it is mission accomplished.

Red Sox manager John Farrell said today Shaw will start at third base on opening day against the Cleveland Indians. Pablo Sandoval will be on the bench.

Shaw is hitting .333 in spring training games with 2 HR and 10 RBI. He is coming off a season of going up and down from Pawtucket to Boston five times. When he finally got a chance to play everyday Shaw hit .270 with 13 HR.

Farrell also noted today he made the decision to start Shaw because of his defense at third base.

NOTE: Catcher Blake Swihart was also part of Townsquare Media's 'Sox Young Guns' Hot Stove Baseball Night in Bangor. He is expected to be the opening day catcher for David Price.
