A Maine National Guard unit won't be heading to Kuwait next spring. The news was announced this week by the new acting Adjutant General, who says it really didn't come as a surprise.

Brigadier General Gerard Bolduc announced that he was notified by the National Guard Bureau Wednesday that the planned deployment to Kuwait for the 136th Engineer Company has been cancelled. The reason given for the change in plans is due to the company's scheduled transition to an infantry unit that would happen around the same time they were returning from overseas.

Bolduc said in a press statement, "The deployment cancellation is not a complete surprise due to transformation timelines. The Maine Army National Guard staff will ensure that we support our Soldiers and their families throughout the deployment cancellation process."

The 136th Engineer Company is headquartered in Skowhegan and has 160 members. It was scheduled to be deployed to Kuwait in the spring of 2016, in order to provide installation upgrades in support of the draw-down of U.S. Forces in Afghanistan. The unit specializes in masonry, carpentry, plumbing, and electrical.
