The best in Maine high school basketball came together Friday night at three locations in the state to kick off the quarterfinal round of the Maine High School Basketball Tournament.

Old Town Holds Off Late Charge To Beat Caribou

[BOX SCORE] In a rematch of last year's Eastern Maine final, the Old Town Coyotes held off a late charge from the Caribou Vikings in the final game of the night at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.

In a Class B boys contest that featured some hard fouls down the stretch, Old Town was able to come away with a 64-55 win.

Old Town's Adam Richardson had 25 points in the win and Eric Hoogterp finished with 24 points before fouling out with just over minutes remaining.

With Hoogterp out, Caribou tried to mount a comeback, but the Vikings were forced to foul with time winding down.

For Caribou, Donovan Savage had 26 points including four 3-pointers and Colby Holdsworth had 15 points in the loss.

Hermon Upsets No. 3 Medomak Valley at Cross Insurance Center

[BOX SCORE] Cinderella made an early appearance at the Cross Insurance Center with the Hermon Hawks upsetting the No. 3 Medomak Valley Panthers 42-30 in the first game of the evening.

The Hawks, who earned a spot in the Class B girls quarterfinals with a win over the No. 6 John Bapst Crusaders in a preliminary game, came in as the No. 11 seed in the tournament.

It was a balanced attack from Hermon, with Shelby Caron leading the team with 10 points. Bryanne Crouse had 8 points, including a 3-pointer as the buzzer sounded. It was Claire Petersen, however, who earned the McDonald's Player of the Game honors, scoring 7 points and coming up with a key steal late in the game to end any hopes of a Panthers rally.

Medomak Valley, who finished the season at 14-5, had trouble solving the Hawks' zone defense, which forced the Panthers to play from the perimeter.

Hermon will play the winner of the second game of the night between the Presque Isle Wildcats (16-2) and the No. 10 Winslow Black Raiders.
