The Gardiner Tigers girls shocked the top-seeded MDI Trojans Saturday afternoon, leading from start to finish and coming away with a 62-50 win.

It was the upset of the tournament thus far with the Tigers spoiling MDI's perfect record, and coming immediately after the underdog MDI boys team upended the No. 4 Gardiner boys on the Cross Center floor.

The Gardiner girls, who came in to the tournament as the No. 9 seed at 8-11, started the game with a 14-4 run. It seemed MDI had settled down, though, closing the gap to 14-13 at the end of the first quarter, but Gardiner pulled away from the Trojans, leading 27-21 at the half and extending that lead to 20 points with two minutes left in the third quarter.

The Tigers had little trouble with the MDI pressure, routinely breaking the press and coming away with easy shots in the second half.

MDI was able to close the gap to 9 points with two minutes left, but was unable to complete the comeback despite forcing several turnovers in the late stages of the game.

Morgan Carver led the Tigers with 23 points and was named the McDonald's Player of the Game. Logan Granholm added 15 for the Tigers. Mary Tolman scored 12.

For MDI, Kelsey Shaw scored 20 points before fouling out. Sarah Phelps added 9 points in the loss.

Gardiner will play Camden Hills in the semifinal round at 3:35 p.m. on Wed., Feb. 18.

In the first game of the afternoon session at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor, the MDI Trojans boys upset Gardiner Tigers 57-53 in quarterfinal action.

The Trojans came into the tournament as the No. 12 seed, advancing to the quarterfinals after winning a peliminary contest against their arch-rival Ellsworth Eagles. It was tight game on Saturday against the No. 4 Gardiner Tigers, who came into the game with a 14-5 record.

The Trojans, who came in with just six wins, proved too much for the Tigers, with freshman Andrew Phelps hitting two key shots in the final two minutes.

Riley Swanson led the Trojans with 17 points and both Aaron Snurkowski and Russell Kropff added 10 points.

Kropff was named McDonald's Player of the Game, scoring all 10 of his points in the second half and 8 of those in the fourth quarter.

For the Tigers, Seth MCFarland had 18 points and Elijah Fish added 13.
