State Police now tell us as many as 40 vehicles may be involved in that accident that closed I-95 Northbound between Newport and Bangor. 14 people were injured but police report there are no fatalities. The MDOT reports one lane of the interstate is open to traffic.

Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland said in a press release that 14 people were injured, and two are in serious condition. EMMC has given us details on how to get information if you believe one of your loved ones has been injured.

The crash involves many cars, a school bus, and a tractor trailer and began around 7:30 a.m. in heavy snow. One veteran trooper described the wreck as "a giant pile of twisted metal." The school bus contained three passengers and McCausland says the kids were shaken up but not hurt.

The original pile-up involved around 25 vehicles. McCausland says the other accidents involved two to three vehicles each, as they came across the scene or tried to avoid other collisions. Some were just vehicles that slid off the road, trying to avoid hitting others.

Again, the Maine Department of Transportation reports one lane of traffic is open on I-95 Northbound from Newport to Bangor.
