For the second consecutive year a former UMaine hockey player is part of the Calder Cup AHL Championship. Defenseman Will O'Neill leads the St. John's (Newfoundland) Ice Caps against the Texas Stars for the league championship in a best-of-7 series.

The IceCaps are the AHL affiliate of the Winnipeg Jets. The Texas Stars are the AHL affiliate of the Dallas Stars.

O'Neill is the second leading point getter for the IceCaps in the playoffs with 2 goals and 11 assists, good for 13 points in 13 games. He had to sit out the last game of the conference finals series after receiving a cross checking match penalty in game 5 of the series.

O'Neill played in 141 games for UMaine from 2008 to 2012.

A year ago, another former Black Bear, Gustav Nyquist helped Grand Rapids win the AHL Calder Cup.

O'Neill and the IceCaps go for the Cup starting Sunday night.
