A Maine lawmaker is trying to make fatigued driving a crime.

The bill proposed by Republican Rep. Stacey Guerin would make it illegal to drive a vehicle while going without sleep for 24 consecutive hours.

Guerin testified in front of the Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee on Monday.

Guerin says she proposed the bill at the request of a constituent who lost a family member in a wreck in 2014 that involved a fatigued driver.

26 year old Craig McPherson of Portland died when he collided with a vehicle that crossed the center line. The driver of the other vehicle told witnesses she had just finished working the night shift and she fell asleep.
