Score round one a win for the Providence College. The Friars beat UMaine 3-1 Friday night in the first game of the best-of-three Hockey East Quarterfinal series.. The Bears know one more loss and their season is over.

Sophomore goalie Jon Gillies, a South Portland native, led Providence by stopping 27 Maine shots. The only goal he allowed was a second period goal by Ben Hutton. That goal was Hutton's 13th of the season and that sets a new school record for defenseman.

But the Friars scored the game's first goal and never trailed. Trevor Mingola scored it for Providence at 5:28 of the first period.

Derek Army scored a minute and a half later, the Friars had a 2-0 after one period.

The Hutton goal got the Bears on the scoreboard and made it a 2-1 game.

Mark Jankowski beat Maine goalie Martin Ouellette on a wrap around play at the 14:05 of the second period to regain the two goal lead for the Friars, 3-1.

Gillies made 29 saves, Ouellette made 34.

Maine is now 16-14-5. Providence is 20-9-6.

Game two of the series is tonight at 7pm.
