I can still remember walking in to the civic center for a game.."PROGRAMS HERE!" they would shout out. And for $1.50 you could get a SCORE magazine with a chance to go out on the ice to play score-o after the second period.
Fighting in hockey seems to have been all but removed from the game in recent months. A fight nowadays is usually broken up as soon as the refs get to the players.
Things were a lot different back in the late 70's-early 80's when hockey was pretty much the only professional sport in Portland. The Cumberland County Civic Center was home to The Maine Mariners and they were a huge crowd favorite because it gave people something to do on the weekends and, let's face it, the fights were epic bench clearing brawls.
