Veteran coach Tony Hamlin told Penquis fans following the state championship win over the weekend that he is going to step away from coaching after 31 years.

Few coaches can exit the sidelines with a storyline like Hamlin. A week ago his Patriots captured the Eastern Maine title by defeating Houlton - it was his 400th career win. Saturday night Penquis captured the state title in Class C with a win over Boothbay. It was the last tournament game ever at Bangor Auditorium.

Afer more than three decades of coaching, the last 17 at Penquis, Hamlin told me it's time to hand over the reigns to someone else. He will stay on as a teacher and AD at Penquis.

Hamlin is one of only two coaches to win state titles with a western Maine team(South Portland) and an eastern Maine team(twice at Penquis).
