Former UMaine Black Bear star hockey player Jim Montgomery will be introduced Monday as the new head coach of the Denver Pioneers, according to reports in the Denver Post.

Mongomery, 43, has been a successful coach and GM of the Dubuque Fighting Saints of the USHL. He also has served as an assistant coach at Notre Dame  and RPI.

Montgomery had high interest in the the UMaine job after Tim Whitehead was fired last week with one year left of his contract.

He is Maine's all-time scorer(301 points), including scoring three goals in the third period in the national championship game in 1993.

At DU, Montgomery replaces longtime coach George Gwozdecky who was fired recently with one year left on his contract. His firing remains controversial with some in Denver.

UMaine AD Steve Abbott told SportsRadio 92.9TheTicket last week that a search committee will be formed to help pick Whitehead's successor. Assistant coach Bob Corkum has been named interim head coach.
