Jimmy Howard is close to signing a 6-year $31-million-dollar contract extension with the Detroit Red Wings. The former UMaine Black Bear goalie is the #1 goalie in Hockeytown (Detroit) and apparently will be in the future.

Howard has a 16-12-4 record and a 2.41 GAA for the Red Wings this season. He has won at least 35 games in each of the past three seasons.

TSN is reporting that the 6-year deal is worth $31.8 million dollars.

NHL.com reports that Howard is telling reporters in Detroit the deal is likely to be signed by this weekend.
