The best in Class D will take to the Cross Insurance Center floor in Bangor on today, with a full slate of quarterfinal games in the Maine High School Basketball Tournament.

Meanwhile, Class C and D are in action in Augusta, while Portland hosts the Class A girls quarterfinals.

Easton Boys Run Away From Wisdom Pioneers in D Quarterfinal

After a close first half, the top-seed Easton Bears ran away from the No. 8 Wisdom Pioneers Monday night in the final Class D quarterfinal of the night at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.

Wisdom came our strong, leading 18-12 in first quarter. But Easton was able to compose themselves, taking a 26-23 at the half, and the end of the 3rd quarter, building a 46-27 lead. When the final buzzer sounded, Easton came away with a 61-40 win.

Junior Jacob Flewelling led the Bears with 26 points.

The No. 4 Washburn Beavers held off a late charge from the Bangor Christian Patriots in a Class D quarterfinal match-up at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor Monday night.

The Beavers (14-5) came away with a 45-41 win over the No. 5 Patriots, who made a fourth quarter run that put themselves in a position to win the game with time running out.

But the Patriots were unable to get a good look at the basket in the final seconds, and Washburn was able to use free throws to make it a two possession game with 1.6 seconds left, putting the game out of reach.

Washburn was led by senior Jarrett Olson with 21 points. Mccall Turner added 13.

Southern Aroostook Girls Outlast Wisdom in Overtime

The top-seed Southern Aroostook Warriors needed overtime to overcome the No. 8 Wisdom Pioneers in Monday’s quarterfinal game at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.

The game was tied at 28 at the end of regulation after the Pioneers took control at the end of the fourth quarter and held the Warriors in check.

But then, it was Sydney Brewer time. Brewer, one of four eight graders on the Southern Aroostook team, scored 9 of the Panthers 10 points in overtime, propelling them to a 38-32 win.

The Warriors (14-5) advance to the semifinals against Central Aroostook.

Brewer led the Warriors with 15 points. Freshman Katelyn Slauenwhite had 11 points and freshman Kassidy Mathers added 10.

Central Aroostook Girls Escape With Narrow Victory Over Machias

The Central Aroostook Panthers mixed it up with the Machias Bulldogs Saturday afternoon at and escaped with a 45-44 win over in a quarterfinal match-up at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.

The No. 4 Panthers of Mars Hill played tenacious defense to come away with the win over the No. 5 Bulldogs.

The game was tied at 41 with 30 seconds to go.

Tate Dolley of Machias led all scorers with 32 points, including 16-16 form the foul line, a Class D tournament record.

Freshman Ashlee Harris led the Panthers with 13 points. Senior Molly Anthony had 5 points but terrorized the Bulldogs on defense forcing numerous turnovers.

Machias Overpowers Shead in Class D Boys Quarterfinal

The Machias Bulldogs got out to a 7-0 lead and didn't look back on their way to a 68-26 win over the Shead Tigers in Monday's Class D North quarterfinal action from the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.

Machias was led by sophomore guard Jordan Grant with 23 points. Sophomore center Jacob Godfrey added 17 in the win.

The No. 2 Bulldogs (17-2) will take on the No. 3 Southern Aroostook Warriors (15-4) in the semifinals.

Shead, of Easport, finishes the season at 11-8.

Matthew Harrie and Riley Demolet each scored 6 for Shead in the loss.

The No. 3 Southern Aroostook Warriors held off a late charge from No. 6 Central Aroostook in the first quarterfinal game of the day at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.

In what was a close game for the entire second half, the Warriors outlasted the Panthers 51 to 45 in the Class D North match-up of in-county rivals.

For the Warriors, Nolan Altvater led the way with 18 points. Justin Mathers added 11, going 9-9 from the free-throw line. Tyler Batchelder had 10.
