Ricky Jones held off a final round charge from Tommy Stirling and won his third Maine Amateur Golf Championship. Augusta CC was the site Thursday. In the past, Jones has won at PVCC and Kebo Valley.

Despite a six shot lead to start the day, Jones had all he could do to fend off Stirling, a young player from southern Maine. Stirling halved the lead with three birdies in the first four holes.

Jones played steady all day, one birdie and two bogeys.

After a bogey on the ninth hole, Stirling double-bogeyed the tenth. He did come back with more birdies on 15, 17 and 18.

But not enough. Jones finished -6 par. Sitrling finished -4 par.

Jones, from Thomaston, has now won third titles and finished runner-up three times since 2003.

He leaves tomorrow for the U.S. National Pulbic Links tournament in Virginia. A win in that tourney gives him at spot in next spring's Masters.
