It may be a while before you can get out the sticks and play a little golf in Maine but it's never too early know about the sweeping rule changes that took effect as of yesterday, January 1st, 2019.

Golf officials say the rule changes are the sweeping changes since the 1980s.

Some of the more significant measures include:

  • No penalty for hitting the hole flag when you choose to leave it in
  • Ball drops are to be done from knee height, not shoulder height
  • Golfers have only three minutes — not five — to find a lost ball
  • No penalty for a ‘double hit’ mid-stroke
