As the Florida Gators move into the NCAA Elite Eight Sunday afternoon on the buzzer-beating shot Friday night, it is interesting to note that Florida coach Mike White has Maine ties.

The 40-year-old White is the son of former UMaine athletic director Kevin White. His father is now the athletic director at Duke.

Kevin White led UMaine athletics from 1987 to 1991 before taking the Tulane AD job. He would move on to Arizona State, Notre Dame and then Duke.

Mike White was 10-years-old when his father took the UMaine job. He graduated from a high school in Louisiana and played basketball at Ole Miss.

His coaching career started at Jacksonville State.

Now in his second year replacing Billy Donovan at Florida, Mike has his Gators just a step away from the Final Four. Florida plays South Carolina at Madison Square Garden in New York Sunday at 2:20pm in the East Region final.
