The Boston Celtics will wait and see if this is the season that they finally win the rights to the top overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft Lottery tonight.

The Cs have the right to switch picks with the Brooklyn Nets, and have the best odds of securing the top selection with a 25 percent chance.  Boston will also have a 64.3 percent chance of finishing in the top three overall and cannot finish lower than fourth.  Phoenix has the second best odds with 19.9 percent chance at pick number one, followed by the LA Lakers (15.6%) and Philadelphia (11.9%).  The Lakers will however lose their selection if it falls outside the top three and it will be surrendered to the 76ers.

The Celtics have made 13 selections in the top-10 picks since 1970, but have never taken home the top pick in a draft in the modern era.  The highest selection Boston has made was at the second spot when they selected Len Bias in 1986 and they took Jaylen Brown at third overall last year.  If Boston receives the top pick in the 2017 draft, it will be the first time since 1982 when a one seed in the playoff also nabbed the first pick (LA Lakers)

The website Tankathon.com shows all the odds for each team in the draft lottery and allows fans to simulate the draft themselves.  In 10 random simulations, we only drew the Celtics as the number one pick twice, the third selection once, and the fourth pick eight times.  There are a total of 14 teams that have at least a chance of the top pick, with Miami having the lowest odds at 0.5 percent.

Try your hand at the simulator and see if you have better results.

We’ll see what selection Boston gets tonight at 8 p.m. and you can hear live coverage on Sports Radio 92.9 FM.
